Essential Recycling and Waste Services has operated the Hamilton Refuse Transfer Station for 30 years.
Formerly Russell Recycling, the business has evolved significantly over the years and has grown from just a single owner-operator in 1986, to our current team of 30 people. Family-owned and operated, Essential Recycling prides itself on providing a safe, user friendly and beneficial community service, while at the same time reducing Hamilton’s environmental footprint.
More than two decades ago, business founders Murray and Barbara Russell identified an opportunity to reuse and recycle both commodity materials and a variety of household goods that would otherwise be sent to landfill. This was particularly insightful at the time as recycling, as we now know it, was in its infancy. As the volume of product recovery grew so did the demand for recycled items. In response, an onsite reuse shop was opened as a way of providing perfectly reusable and restorable materials to the community. This shop has grown in popularity and today attracts hundreds of customers every day. Some of our loyal followers have been shopping with us for the past 20 years!
Current managing Director, Ryan Russell, has continued his parents legacy and for the past 10 years has systematically refined our operational capability in line with industry best practice, while maintaining a strong focus on Waste Minimisation.
Jenna Russell, Ryan’s wife, joined the family business in 2010 following a career in Public relations and corporate communications. As head of business strategy and compliance she is focussed to day on create meaningful tools for business growth and ensuring the health and safety of all those to visit the site. As a company we are committed to public safety and a range of safety measures are apparent as you enter and use the transfer station. Barrier systems and wheel stops have been installed along the pit which has resulted in a significant reduction in the number of people falling into the pit.
Each year our team saves thousands of tonnes of refuse from being sent to landfill. Through extensive recovery systems and a proven method for the resale of both commodity materials and household goods we have developed an economically sustainable waste minimisation model that attracts the attention of industry professionals throughout Australasia.
Our goal is to ensure your experience with us is a positive and safe one.
